Spring and summer months in Charleston were always lots of fun for the Holder family cousins. We would often go to Aunt Peggy and Uncle Archie’s house on James Island to swim, fish, crab, shrimp or simply take a ride in the boat. Once, when at Peggy and Archie’s house, Peggy fell off the dock and into the mud; she came racing up the back yard; all of the cousins present at the time were scared because she was telling us she was the “Mud Monster” coming to get us! She always had plenty of cats to play with, too, and there was always a bounty of food to be shared with all.

Peggy had a “pet spider” that lived in her den. It was fascinating to watch the spider spin its’ web. That spider was around for years! Charles and Kay Parrish moved just down the street from Peggy and Archie and it was especially fun because we were so close together!

During the holidays, Aunt Peggy and Uncle Archie always had a huge live Christmas tree that was always fragrant and beautiful. They would always pick out the biggest Christmas tree and when the lights, garland, tinsel and ornaments were placed on the tree, it was magical! Peggy and Archie always had New Year’s Eve parties that were spectacular; it was the only time the smaller children weren’t allowed to attend a family event because the Holder brothers and sisters always stayed well past midnight, when Peggy would serve a traditional New Year’s feast!

Peggy was a very beautiful lady who adored her grandchildren. It was so obvious to everyone; even when Peggy was ill, that her grandchildren were the light in her life. She was a courageous lady who was an inspiration to all!
