A Special Tribute

By Mark Podmore

William “Lefty” Holder was a “big brother” to everyone. He was always very laid back and loved life. He relished every minute! William loved to play golf, a trait he passed down to his granddaughter, Kristy McPherson. I know he must be at each and every one of Kristy’s golf games; standing beside her and glowing with pride!

William and Alma moved away for several years before retiring to Garden City, SC. Visiting them was always a treat for any one of the family members. They initially rented a house next door to the house they eventually purchased. William once purchased a Ford Granada; it was metallic silver with a red vinyl top and red interior. One time the cruise control on the car was sticking and when the Podmore family was visiting, he came roaring up to the house with the accelerator pedal stuck to the floor. Did William get upset? Nope, he took it in stride as he did everything.

Alma would always make huge meals for guests; she made the best fried chicken, biscuits, corn on the cob and gravy for dinner at the beach house. Breakfast was a feast of biscuits, pancakes, sausage, bacon, eggs and juice.

When Janice and David moved to Garden City, they built an exact duplicate downstairs of the upstairs of the Garden City house. It was always a treat visiting back then because we would always get to see Janice and her family, too! After Janice and her family moved to Conway, William and Alma soon followed suit; moving to Conway to be closer to their precious grandchildren.
